چکیده

There is growing concern that the traditional "protectionist" approach to conservation is expensive and fails to deliver the desired environmental outcomes. Encouraged by economists, “supply side” policies to conserve endangered species have drawn support. By generating supplies from captive–bred animals, wildlife commodity prices are expected to fall, thereby lowering the incentive to poach species in the wild. Supply side policies, however, are based on a naïve representation of the institutional framework within which the wildlife trade takes place, and neglect the potential strategic responses of economic agents. Adopting a richer model, we analyze the effect of supply side policies and conclude that under a wide range of circumstances these policies may contribute to further devastation of wild stocks. We derive conditions under which captive breeding contributes to conservation, and discuss implications for policy makers.

Prospects for captive breeding of poorly known small cetacean species

Because of the precarious condition of small cetacean species and subpopulations listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered by the IUCN, use of captive breeding for conservation has been suggested for some of them, and will likely be suggested for others. A successful captive breeding program for a new species cannot be implemented until reliable capture and husbandry techniques have been de...

Phylogeny of gazelles in some islands of Iran based on mtDNA sequences: Species identification and implications for conservation

Different species of gazelles are among the most endangered mammals on the Asian steppes and occur in the central, southern and northwestern regions of Iran. The previous conservation efforts in this region have been incomplete due to confusion about the phylogenetic relationship among various populations. So that, different conservation programs such as ex-situ breeding and transfer of captive...

Recent captive-breeding proposals and the return of the ark concept to global species conservation.

Captive breeding for reintroduction is a much discussed tool in the management of endangered species. Although a number of high-profile case studies illustrate the critical role captive breeding can play in preventing species extinction (e.g., Stanley Price 1989; Kleiman & Rylands 2002; Cade & Burnham 2003), the available historical evidence indicates most reintroduction attempts failed (Griffi...

ILAR Journal Online, Volume 38(2) 1997: The Role of Computational Models in Animal Research

Laboratory populations and colonies of animals are established and maintained for a variety of purposes with biomedical, reproductive, behavioral, and genetical research being among the most common uses. Animal populations are also established and maintained for conservation purposes, as is the case with endangered species captive breeding programs in zoological parks and similar institutions. ...

Low Impact of Avian Pox on Captive-Bred Houbara Bustard Breeding Performance

Avian pox, a disease caused by avipoxviruses, is a major cause of decline of some endangered bird species. While its impact has been assessed in several species in the wild, effects of the disease in conservation breeding have never been studied. Houbara bustard species (Chlamydotis undulata and Chlamydotis macqueenii), whose populations declined in the last decades, have been captive bred for ...
